Designated Safeguarding Lead Course
This is an advanced course for those senior members of school staff who wish to undertake the role of DSL. The role of DSL is crucial to the safeguarding and welfare of children. This course aims to equip delegates with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake this demanding role.
Course content includes;
- The main roles and responsibilities of the designated safeguarding lead
- Consideration of personal values in relation to child abuse and their impact on professional practice
- Developing organisational practice in relation to child safety and welfare
- Examining barriers preventing children from reporting abuse or concerns
- Effective response to disclosures by children
- Barriers to reporting by staff methods of overcoming them
- Correct steps and decisions to take following concerns raised
- The likely process following a referral to social services or the police and the role of the school
- Confidentiality and information sharing
- The emotional impact of safeguarding and safeguarding issues on staff, the DSL and others
- Organisational policy and process development
The course will use case studies and examples of safeguarding work.
Delegates should be familiar with current relevant legislation and the Keeping Children Safe in Education document. These will be referred to throughout the course.
